6th Annual Model Railroad Days

Friday evening is the event Kick-Off Party offering wine & food pairing, entertainment, preview of the Art Show/SilentAuction and special raffle prize packages will be held at the Veterans' Hall.
Saturday offers Wine Tasting at the Veterans' Hall & Joslyn Center (west village) & the Cambria Historical Museum (east village), over 35 local wineries participating. In addition Saturday offers an Art Show/Silent Auction of local artists original creations and more opportunities for guests to acquire raffle tickets by visiting participating businesses. Monarch Butterfly Grove Talks

The beautiful orange and black "fairy-like" Monarch Butterflies cluster by the thousands in the Eucalyptus trees, giving the appearance of golden leaves. Our Monarch Butterfly Grove is located on Highway 1 just south of the Pismo State Beach North Beach Campground and is the most visited Monarch Grove in the world. Special Heroes Amateur Softball Association Golf Event

The Special Heroes Amateur Softball Association (ASA), a local non-profit organization that raises funds for special needs community members for sports programs, is proud to host the 3rd Annual Golf Special Heroes Event, Saturday, January 26, 2013. The Golf Event is free for local special needs heroes who will enjoy a fun day of golf. It will take place at the nine-hole Laguna Lake Golf Course in San Luis Obispo from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
Participants of the golf event are to show up at 10:00 am for registration. The Greater Pismo Beach Kiwanis will also participate at the golf event by generously donating a free lunch for participants that day. Additionally, local members of the California Highway Patrol will be on hand to meet with the participants to also help make it a fun and exciting day.

Hike the Pecho Coast Trail

Every Wednesday and Saturday take a guided hike along the beautiful Pecho Coast Trail to the historic Point San Luis Lighthouse, built in 1890. Along the way see beautiful views of the harbor and learn the history of the trail and the Lighthouse. The trail is only open during these times. You must be 9 years or older, and you must be in good physical shape, the hike is somewhat strenuous. Hikes last about 4 hours. Saturday offers one fast and one slower hike. RESERVATIONS REQUIRED and can be made by visiting the website or calling 805-541-TREK. Rain the day before will cancel the hike.

Our Dinner on the Dunes Morro Bay kayak trip is possibly one of the most unique kayak trips in California. Kayaking Morro Bay in the late afternoon, we'll visit some of the favorite hangout areas for local wildlife before heading to the outer sandspit. Once inhabited by California Grizzly Bears and Chumash Indians, Los Osos / Baywood Park has become quite the community where nature still prevails. From the moment you enter the "Valley of the Bears" you enter a truly enchanted part of California's Central Coast.
The village atmosphere of downtown Baywood Park encourages one to stroll down 2nd and 3rd Streets. The small shops are framed by abundant grass, trees, and flowers. The variety of businesses serving the community include art galleries, antiques, food & spirits, restaurants, specialty shops, and two waterfront inns.
The Baywood Park Pier is located at the intersection of 2nd Street and El Morro Ave. overlooking the shores of the lagoon-like estuary. It is a pleasant, quiet place where you can enjoy a view of the estuary and its bird life, a scene that changes dramatically with the tides.

Visit Los Osos Oaks State Reserve!

Watch for small signs, and a parking lot on the south side of Los Osos Valley Road, 1/2 mile east of South Bay Boulevard. An easy one-mile trail leads visitors under the low canopy of "Pygmy Oaks," dwarfed coast live oaks that are 600 to 800 years old. The leaf-covered trail winds among the trees' gnarled gray trunks, and the mushrooms, wild cucumbers, hollyleaf cherry, and other flora that exist in this shaded land where Chumash Indians once lived. Visitors should be wary of a prolific member of the reserve's plant community poison oak. Avoid its shiny "leaves of three" lining the trail in many places.

At the west side of the community, where Los Osos Valley Road turns into Pecho Valley Road, you'll enter the "gateway" to Montana de Oro State Park - one of the most beautiful places you'll ever experience; miles of unpopulated rocky shores and sandy beaches and 7,828 acres of hills, and eucalyptus groves. 50 miles of hiking, biking, and equestrian trails provide access to the park's back-country, wooded stream canyons, tide pools, and hidden coves and beaches. Trails following the edge of the coastal bluffs provide spectacular views of the tilted and twisted strata of the rocky shoreline and, in the distance, Morro Rock, and the Morro Bay sandspit.

Visit the Sweet Springs Nature Preserve!

The Morro Coast Audubon Society chapter manages this preserve. Trails lead among Monterey cypress and eucalyptus to two freshwater ponds, and around a salt marsh to the edge of Morro Bay. Birds are attracted to the variety of habitats in the preserve, and many shorebirds and ducks spend the winter in the adjoining bay.
The 24-acre preserve is the home of several threatened or endangered species, and no plants or animals may be collected there. The reintroduction of native species is a continuing goal of the Morro Coast Audubon Society.

Every day, be amused while looking down at the harbor seals that use the lower level of Harford Pier as their favorite "hang-out". Watch as they live their life - barking, sleeping, arguing and fishing. Note: do NOT get too close, and do not feed them. Great educational fun for kids and adults!
