Every first Friday, hundreds of visitors converge on downtown SLO to see new art exhibits and add to their growing collections. With dozens of galleries and non-traditional exhibit spaces, it's SLO's favorite night of the month to celebrate art for free! Though many shops are open earlier, Art After Dark officially starts at 6pm and runs to 9pm.
On a typical Art After Dark, over 20 galleries and non-traditional art venues (think restaurants, boutiques, and salons) spotlight the best of established and emerging local artists. They sometimes also feature the works of nationally and internationally acclaimed artists. Expect sore feet and creative juices to be flowing from 6 to 9pm on the first Friday of the month.

Bryce Vinokurov's mostly abstract and satirical artwork revolves around a group of foodies who are not set in a specific time or space. Mr. Vinokurov enjoys the idea of these foodies exiled to an idyllic place where they are cooking on grills and fighting over recipes and truffle pigs. The inspiration for the landscape these foodies often find themselves in, and the composition of these groups are heavily influenced by the painters Giotto, Piero della Francesca, and Lorenzetti.

Philip Carey tends to remember his numerous and wacky dreams. When he awakens, Mr. Carey spends the mornings drawing the stories using the ubiquitous 3 x 5 Post-It note. This keeps the art and text to the bare essentials. The exhibit will include a massive 8 x 10 foot collage of meeting notes along with original music. The installation will also include a large 3 dimensional work that addresses his thoughts on recent health concerns.

Altogether there are twenty pieces in The Circus. This show includes circus trains carrying wild animals in fanciful cars constructed from recycled cigar boxes and beer cans. Famous circus performers like Chang and Eng, Siamese twins, are portrayed in papier-mâché. All the pieces in the show are mixed media and the figures are constructed of papier-mâché over wire armatures. The pieces are painted with acrylic paint, and embellished with gold leaf.

The County Honor Band Festival is an event held each February to showcase the finest Jr. High and High School musicians from around the county. Students audition in January and attend rehearsals to prepare the music for the culminating concert on February 22. This year, Rita Watson will be the guest conductor for the Jr. Honor Band, and Rich Watson will direct the High School group. Both are music educators who are known for their outstanding band programs in Southern California!
