Nipomo

Photo of a golf course in Nipomo California. The name of Nipomo, California is derived from the Chumash Indian word "Nepomah", meaning "the foot of the hills". The quaint community is nestled in the foothills with a variety of scenic views: acres of avocado and lemon orchards, sand dunes bordering the ocean, and stately rows of eucalyptus trees.

Wildlife flourishes in the Oso Flaco Lake area in the Nipomo Mesa. The lake is within an 18,000 acre; 18-mile pristine shoreline that has been designated a national natural landmark. Stroll on the boardwalk while exploring over 50 species of birds. If golf is a desire, select from several challenging courses located in South county, including Blacklake Golf Course with 27-holes to test your skills.

The historic Rancho Nipomo and Casa de Dana, located in the center of the California coast, for many years served as an important stop for those traveling on El Camino Real, "The King's Highway", between Missions San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara. Tours are available.

Upcoming Nipomo Events & Activities

Nipomo, California the southern-most community in San Luis Obispo County, is also one of the fastest growing, with a 57% increase in dwelling units since 1990. Home to lots of growing families, Nipomo is one of the younger communities in San Luis Obispo County.

Like many communities in San Luis Obispo County, Nipomo has a colorful history tied up with the Spanish settlement of the area over 200 years ago. The Dana Adobe was the center of the huge rancho of 37,000 acres granted to Captain Dana after he became a Mexican citizen in 1835. The preservation of this adobe is a present from local volunteers to all of the visitors and residents of the county.

One part of the past is preserved in the Nipomo Native Gardens, located at Camino Caballo and Pomeroy. A profusion of native trees and plants is maintained by another cadre of volunteers.
