Final Night at Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast to Rock Ranch BBQ, Local Wines and Hot Air Balloon

Sunset Magazine's SAVOR the Central Coast is here!   At Paso Glow guests will have the opportunity to channel their inner cowboy/cowgirl with rustic elegance at Windfall Farms, taking place on Sept. 29 from 6 to 10 p.m.

Windfall Farms, an exclusive community that promotes and enhances the sustainability of local agriculture and celebrates equestrian, ranch and agrarian lifestyles, the event will wow attendees with ranch-inspired delicacies, the region's best wines and the warm glow of many illuminated hot air balloons. Acclaimed Chef Tom Fundaro of Villa Creek Restaurant will pull together top Paso Robles chefs to show off their talents at this reception-style event, featuring American Lamb, Harris Ranch beef and other locally inspired foods. Joining Chef Fundaro will be Chef Chris Kobayashi of Artisan, Mike and Aaron Dean of Dean Brothers Smokehouse, Chef Julie Simon of Thomas Hill Organics, Chef Kevin Fryburger of the Paso Robles Inn, and Chef Anthony Hagans of Harris Ranch. Guests will be invited to wear their stylish boots and dance the night away to the tunes of local Grammy Award-Winner, Louie Ortega and Rio Salinas.

"We're excited to introduce this new twist on Paso Glow to Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast fans," said Stacie Jacob, executive director of the San Luis Obispo County Visitors & Conference Bureau (SLOCVCB), which co-hosts the event with Sunset magazine, the premier guide on life in the West. "Paso Robles is quickly becoming the state's hottest playground for food and wine lovers desiring a new experience that is refreshingly down to earth and welcoming.  This event will give fans what they crave, the friendly hospitality that defines our region, while feeling like they've stepped into the pages of Sunset magazine."

We have attended this world class event from its inception. Paso Glow is the latest addition to Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast, which features four days of national-caliber culinary adventures, from special events and celebrity chef seminars to Sunset editor workshops, regional wine tastings and adventure tours.  Located midway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the event takes place Sept. 27-30 at the renowned Santa Margarita Ranch and other locations around San Luis Obispo Count from the coast and Hearst Castle to wine country.

"There's already a buzz about town over Paso Glow, so we expect this event to sell out fast," said Maryann Stansfield, marketing director of the Travel Paso Robles Alliance, which is co-hosting the event with the SLOCVCB. "Over the past few years, Paso Robles has become a leader in innovative farm fresh cuisine, with abundant organic fruits and vegetables, grass-fed meats, virgin olive oil and artisanal cheeses. The natural marriage of locally grown food and wine, coupled with our proximity to local fresh seafood, is inspiring many ambitious and creative chefs from all over the country to move to the area to open restaurants. Paso Glow will feature all the best of our community, making it a memorable night for SAVOR fans."  Stansfield also mentioned that the Travel Paso Robles Alliance is running a Facebook promotion to give fans the chance to win four passes to Paso Glow and Sunset SAVOR the Central Coast's Main Event Sept. 29-30.

Tickets to Paso Glow, which cost $75, can be purchased at www.savorcentralcoast.com.

Tap It Brewing Co. Awarded Gold Medal at the LA County Fair

tap it brew

Tap It Brewing Co. of San Luis Obispo announced that the new Tap It Brewing American Standard Ale was awarded a first place Gold medal in the Session Pale category at the 2012 Los Angeles International Beer Competition at the LA County Fair. The brewery's signature IPA earned a Bronze Award in the competition's American-Style India Pale Ale category.

This beer competition is part of the 90th annual Los Angeles County Fair. The LA County Fair is the largest in North America and was attended by nearly 1.5 million people last year. Beers were judged against others of similar style as defined by Brewers Association style guidelines.

The Tap It American Standard Ale is an all-American Session Pale Ale hand crafted using premium American ingredients. The beer displays a bright hop flavor and aroma, yet very little bitterness. To achieve this flavor profile, the brewery used no bittering hops. Instead the brewmaster emphasized the hop character with a first wort addition, then whirlpool additions. Each of these processes adds flavor, while yielding minimal bitterness. Hops include Cascade and Zythos, each imparting a distinctive and refreshingly citrusy character, reminiscent of tangerines and grapefruit. This beer is also generously dry hopped, using the same Cascade and Zythos.

Tap It Brewing's IPA is regarded as hoppy in flavor with a smooth aroma and brewed with the avant-garde method of first wort hopping, the technique of adding hops to the kettle before boil. This creates a harmonious explosion of hop aroma and flavor noticeable throughout the tasting experience. Fragrances of tangerine and grapefruit entice the nose. A thick hazy rich head leads drinkers toward an experience rich in citrus and earthy flavors ending with a smooth, sticky finish. The complex floral and citrusy tones from Citra and Simcoe hops welcomes the drinker, while two more hop varietals mate smoothly with four malt varieties.

Sunset Magazine's Savor the Central Coast returns

Sunset Magazine's Savor the Central Coast
returns to the bucolic and beautiful
Santa Margarita Ranch from
Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30.

Sunset Savor the Central Coast

SUPPING, SUNSET-STYLE: How are you when you get your monthly issue of Sunset magazine? We tend to snatch it from the mailbox and go directly to the nearest comfy seat, tasks and errands dismissed. Then we pore over each photo and each recipe and each succulent garden -- if we don't see a feature on succulent gardens in an issue of Sunset we're kind of bummed -- and dream of living the Sunset way. And one of the ways to be truly immersive in that special Sunset style of living is to attend Savor the Central Coast, a four-day food extravaganza that's co-presented by the publication and the San Luis Obispo Visitors & Conference Bureau. The second co-host is a bit of a giveaway as to where it takes place; it does indeed happen within shouting distance of SLO, and its centered around the beautiful Santa Margarita Ranch. And this year's dates? The perfect early fall stretch of Thursday, Sept. 27 through Sunday, Sept. 30.

CHEFS ON BOARD
: There are a number of high-profile food events that are regular happenings around our state, and Savor the Central Coast is no different; it's a biggie on the calendar, meaning culinaires like Ted Allen, Aarti Sequeira, and Susan Feniger attend (they are indeed attending this year). Adventure tours, wine seminars, and, of course, demos are part of the extra long, extra delicious weekend; those will be ticketed differently, but things kick off at twenty bucks for the seminars. Oh, and we used the term "high-profile"; Savor the Central Coast is indeed top shelf, but we think of it as a more laid-back affair. After all, it is in SLO, which practically has a law about being overly revved up. One reason it is regularly billed as "The Happiest City in America," right?

These areas encompass everything you’d expect from the California coast; miles of rocky shoreline and dreamy beaches for swimming and surfing. Panoramic views stretch out over the Pacific for as far as the eye can see, but these regions also extend far inland to towering mountains, rolling hills and some desert-like expanses.

I Love Where I Live...Hats off to "SAVOR"!

I Love Where I Live...Hats off to "SAVOR"!

I really, truly, and most honestly hope you were able to participate in at least one of the many events that comprised the "Savor the Central Coast" event that occurred this last weekend. Each of the four event days had something special and unique to offer to both the local and the visitor, alike.

First off, I just need to get on the record and say "Hurrah!" to the brain trust that conceptualized and put this event on the map. Thanks to the folks at Sunset Magazine who have given the event visibility, their coveted seal of approval, and their direct involvement. But, let's not forget the tremendous talent, coordination, and vision required on the local front to conceive of, organize, and pull off an event of National stature.

I openly applaud the Leadership who labored behind the scenes to turn out a AAA+ event; the staff support who implemented these ambitious plans, and; the many local volunteers who gave their all and best to share themselves and their time to make the four days of "SAVOR" a top notch experience for all involved.

As a ‘blogger' about the food and wines of the Central Coast, I can say with all certainty the SAVOR adventure is a pinnacle event that brings together so much of what we have to offer in a concise, product-driven venue that makes learning about and accessing the huge number of our wine and culinary offerings easy and fun!

Hats off to all of you "SAVOR" folks - organizers, participants, and guests - alike!
