The New Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles

The New Vina Robles Amphitheatre in Paso Robles

As someone who had the privilege of growing up on the Central Coast, I didn't want for very many things to fill my spare time. There are few places in this world where one can surf in the morning and then drive 2 hours to experience fresh snow! Being in the Paso Robles area affords residents and visitors the opportunity to hike and camp one day and then go wine tasting and romp around the luxurious Hearst Castle the next!

In all of these years, the only thing that has been missing from Paso Robles was year round live music. The invention of the iPod and Pandora Radio lessened my personal pain but what I really yearned for was the experience of watching my favorite bands! Thanks to the new Vina Robles Amphitheatre, gone are the days of driving to Santa Barbara to see the latest musical act. All of my concert wishes have been fulfilled!
I recently reached out to my friends at Vina Robles to get a sneak peek at the highlights of this impressive venue. Here is what I discovered:

• Due to its shape, you will have perfect a perfect view and acoustics from every seat, providing patrons with the most intimate and personal concert experience. The very back of the lawn is only 150 feet from the stage!
• There are various seating and ticket options available from floor and fixed seating to luxury boxes and general admission lawn seating.
• Patrons will receive an overall wine country experience that combines wine and food with the arts. There are concessions ranging from homemade corn dogs to wood fired pizzas along with Vina Robles estate wines and local beer.
• There is a full-service restaurant serving multi-course, prix fixe, pre-show dinners which is available to patrons who have a ticket for show night.
• With a seating capacity of 3,300, this is the only venue of its kind between Santa Barbara and San Jose.
• Designed with flexibility in mind, the amphitheatre can host various types of performances and music in a wide range of genres.

Are you as excited as I am? I became even more excited when I saw the 2013 concert line-up which features bands like Yes, Bruce Hornsby, ZZ Top, Lyle Lovett & his Large Band, Los Lobos, Tony Bennett, Michael Franti & Spearhead, Darius Rucker, Ziggy Marley with Steel Pulse, Peter Frampton along with B.B. King, Sammy Hagar and so much more!

Opening night is Saturday, July 6th. For a full list of concerts, click here: www.vinaroblesamphitheatre.com/concerts

Heritage Gallery West is Coming to Paso Robles

Heritage Gallery West is Coming to Paso Robles

Westward Ho! Heritage Gallery, the Western art powerhouse that represents the likes of Remington, C.M. Russell, and other old masters, comes West this Summer. A partnership of Robert and Lisa Urciuoli of Paso Robles and Tim Wiegand of Scottsdale, Arizona, Heritage's sister gallery, Heritage Gallery West, will be located at 840 13th Street.

Heritage Gallery's history in Scottsdale dates to the early 1960's, the very emergence of Scottsdale as a Fine Art center. Heritage Gallery West aims to do the same in Paso Robles. Recognizing that there is a growing interest in art in the region and Paso Robles emergence as an arts destination, local residents Robert and Lisa felt compelled to "become a part of the movement by opening a commercial art gallery with a traditional focus." The gallery will expand on Heritage Gallery's extensive western art collection, with representation and impressionistic offerings as well.

Lisa explains, "My husband Robert and I fell in love with the picturesque landscape and warm hospitality of the Central Coast in the 1990's. Since relocating here, we continue to be moved by the natural beauty and agricultural roots of the community. We hope to reflect these qualities in the art pieces we offer, including original paintings, sculptures, and limited edition giclees."

In addition to featuring nationally and internationally recognized artists, Heritage Gallery West will also be introducing pieces from regional plein air artists and sculptors as well. Some of the artists that will be featured include: Alfredo Rodriguez, Andre Kohn, BC Nowlin, Carol Armstrong, Carolyn Hesse-Low, D. Michael Thomas, David Argyle, Ken Rowe, Mark Keathley, Paul Dykman, and Susan von Borstel.
While the gallery will be open to the public later this month, the official grand opening will be Saturday, July 13 from 6 pm to 9 pm. It features complimentary hors d'oeuvres and local wines.

Where to Retire Magazine Announces 50 Best Master-Planned Communities in the United States

The country's 50 best master-planned communities selected by Where to Retire magazine highlight a resurgent era in active-adult and master-planned living - in demand now more than ever, with the boost in the economy and the continuing coming of age of baby boomers. The list is the only one of its kind, focusing on communities rather than locales and featuring first person testimonials by current residents. Where to Retire reveals "The Short List: 50 Best Master-Planned Communities in the United States," in the July/August issue, on newsstands June 18. (Note: 50 communities listed below.)

The selections in 17 states won their place in the top 50 by breaking new ground with amenities such as classes in digital photography and wine appreciation at Trilogy at Monarch Dunes in California, expansive open space and a focus on green living at Harmony in Florida and street festivals and a seasonal farmers market at NorthWest Crossing in Oregon to mention a few. Others offer workplaces inside the gates, walking trails and community gardens - options far beyond the traditional golf courses and swimming pools. Living in the chosen communities offers numerous benefits, says Where to Retire Publisher Karen Northridge.

"Time and again, the retirees interviewed for this story told us their neighborhoods give them opportunities to try different activities, connect with like-minded people and in the process, build brand-new lifestyles," Northridge says. "For these retirees, their communities provide much more than comfortable, attractive housing; they also serve as a catalyst for residents to reinvent themselves."

Nearly a year ago, Where to Retire editors began gathering and evaluating information on more than 100 communities across the nation. The chosen neighborhoods offer homes that vary in price, from manufactured homes starting in the $80,000s to site-built, single-family homes that begin in the $120,000s. Half the developments are active-adult communities, where residents must meet minimum age requirements. The communities are not ranked, but rather profiled in alphabetical order by state.

The Mysteries of Wine Revealed

Wine lovers experience a whole new appreciation for wine at Harvest Crush Encounters

Making wine is fun and exciting. It's also filled with lots of surprises for consumers. One of the most frequent comments we hear from "Crush-tomers" is that experiencing one of our Crush Encounters gives them a "whole new appreciation" for wine.

From how and when the grapes are selected for harvest to the intricacies of bottling, wine lovers like you can sip and learn your way to a whole new appreciation for wine too!

Both our Crush Encounters and Harvest Tour de Vin are fun-filled weekends of wine country fun.  Although we wine, dine and entertain you throughout your Crush Encounter, you'll also discover that winemaking isn't just all fun and games. There are many thoughtful decisions that go into growing grapes and that wine is both an art and a science.

While enjoying the fresh air and beauty of roaming through a picturesque vineyard filled with plump, juicy clusters, you can try your hand at picking wine grapes that we transform into world-class wine, and that you can ultimately call your own. You'll experience the thrill of sorting the fruit,  watch its transformation into juice and be able to taste it right from the vat. You'll find out about Brix, yeasts and hydrometers and how all of these things ultimately influence what you end up with in your glass. And don't forget about the stomping. You can feel the berries squish between your toes as you compete in our berry stomp competition.

For those who don't want to roll up their sleeves and get involved, we also offer our luxurious Harvest Tour de Vin. This is more of the "backstage pass" approach to experiencing harvest in wine country.

Don't miss this chance to put your hand...and footprint on our 2013 vintage at our Crush Encounter this fall.  Or you can sit back and relax with our ultimate Harvest Tour de Vin exclusive wine country tour. Both events are unique, unparalleled and unforgettable.

Two- and three-day Crush Encounter options are available but space is limited. A 10% early registration discount is available through July 31 and Gold and Platinum Crush Club members save an additional 10%.

9TH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA WINE MONTH
TAKES PLACE SEPT. 1-30, 2013

Join the Fun: Wine Events and Immersion Experiences
Offered Statewide and Beyond

In September, ripe grapes hanging heavy on the vine, golden fall sunshine and air filled with fruity aromas can mean only one thing: it's time for harvest! To launch the harvest season, wine regions and wineries across the Golden State will celebrate the 9th annual September California Wine Month-organized by California's Wine Institute.

From innovative wine immersion experiences to cool wine events, September is an ideal time to visit wine country, when the creative energy of California's artisan winegrowers and winemakers meet the grapes and the process of producing the next great vintage begins.

From Sept. 1-30, 2013, dozens of wineries in wine regions across California will host special consumer events and experiences celebrating the contributions of the state's growers and vintners who are committed to earth- and people-friendly sustainable practices in vineyards and wineries.

Can't make it to wine country this fall? A great way to experience many of California's wine regions in one stop is Wine Institute's "California Wines Road Trip" multi-region tasting events in New York City and San Francisco in September. In New York City, Friday the 13th will be a lucky day for wine lovers who can sample wines at California Wine Merchants from 5-7:30 p.m. Later in the month, they can attend a ticketed New York City tasting event with more than 70 wines from 10 California regions at the Astor Center on Monday, Sept. 16 from 6-8 p.m. (click here for information and tickets); and enjoy in-store tastings that will take place throughout September across Manhattan and Brooklyn. One in five Americans struggle with a lifelong disability and nearly two million men and women have served our country in Iraq and Afghanistan and are coming home looking for ways to feel whole again and to fit back in to 'normal' life. Whether they are an amputee, visually impaired, suffer from PTSD, have quadriplegia, or suffer from a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Whether they served in WWII, Korea, Vietnam, the Gulf war, Iraq or Afghanistan. Whether they are a child with autism, or a young woman who has lost a limb to cancer, AmpSurfTM offers a unique program to bring the healing power of the ocean and adaptive surfing together for an experience that is both mentally and physically rehabilitating.

For 10 years, AmpSurf has been providing our Learn to Surf Clinics to serve those who need us. We have served hundreds of our disabled veteran American heroes as well as disabled adults and children who probably never would have had this experience if it hadn't been for our program.

I Love Where I Live: Discover Old San Luis BBQ!

I Love Where I Live:
Discover Old San Luis BBQ!

san luis obispo bbq

On the Central Coast we have many treasures to share. Being a "foodie" of the first order, I consider our wines, artisanal food products and our many, many wonderful restaurants something that is most certainly one of our treasures.

My latest food purveyor to make it to the top of my "must share" list is a little hole in the wall place named "Old San Luis BBQ Co."  The started out as a catering company and just recently opened a pick-up restaurant at 670 Higuera. The shop is located in the shopping center on the corner of Higuera and Nipomo streets in Downtown San Luis Obispo.

What's the fare?  It's all about BBQ, but not just any BBQ - it highlights and elevates our own Santa Maria Style BBQ from the simply delicious to the sublime. The owner did his homework and uses several authentic family recipes that over time have come to define the term "Santa Maria BBQ."

You might be asking "What is Santa Maria BBQ?"  The style has a long tradition on the Central Coast and is known for using a unique cut of meat (Beef Tri-Tip), a locally grown bean (for the inevitable baked beans), crusty delicious bread for the trademark sandwich rolls and garlic bread (produced locally) as well as a huge, fresh salad.

In the past, we've often had to wait for various charity groups to haul out their BBQ wagon to local street corners to get the real thing. Now, thanks to Old San Luis BBQ we can satisfy that itch for truly authentic Santa Maria BBQ any day of the week - and, their prices are most reasonable. Yep, I'm a happy camper.... And I know you will be too after trying them out.

A few suggestions: Of coarse try the tri-tip sandwich, but add to that the corn pie and the strawberry salad for a filling and delicious lunch or dinner.

Reminder: this is a "Take-Out" joint, although there is outside seating in a nice covered setting. They open at 11a.m. and close at 8p.m. or later depending on the day of the week.

For more information call (805) 285-2473 or visit them on the web at  http://oldsanluisbbq.com
